Become a Builder of Our Future

As he planned the University of Virginia and designed its first buildings, Thomas Jefferson envisioned a great public institution of global scope and character—in his words, the "future bulwark of the human mind in this hemisphere." More than at any time in its history, the University is within reach of this goal.

To achieve it, the University has mounted a bold and ambitious campaign. Its $3 billion target includes carefully selected priorities in every school and program on the Grounds, as well as University-wide initiatives that will establish new strengths across disciplines. Although it will address many needs, the campaign is pursuing support for three overarching purposes

  • To provide a student experience unmatched on any American campus
  • To generate ideas and discoveries vitally important to our well-being, including new breakthroughs in science, engineering, and medicine
  • To harness the power of knowledge to make the world a better place

2006–2011

The Campaign for the University of Virginia was launched on September 29, 2006, and will conclude on December 31, 2011. During this time, any gift for any purpose to the University will be counted in the campaign total. In September 2009, the campaign reached its $2 billion milestone. Read more at UVa Today.

"Useful Knowledge"

President John T. Casteen

The University of Virginia was the last of Jefferson's great creations, one of only three for which he asked to be remembered. His aim was to prepare young people who would come after him to carry on the work of the Republic and to equip them with knowledge equal to the task. We continue to fulfill this mission today. The kind of education we offer, an education built on what Jefferson termed "useful knowledge," has never been more important than it is now.  more >
