Mark Smith - Senior Director of Gift Planning Mark joined the University of Virginia Office of Gift Planning in 2000. Prior to joining the Gift Planning team, Mark worked as a missionary in the 1980s, setting up relief programs in Cuba and medical clinics in the Dominican Republic. In 1997, he became Director of Development for Covenant House in Florida. Mark received his B.S. from Winthrop University and his M.B.A. from Nova Southeastern University. He is a member of the Partnership for Philanthropic Planning (PPP), and the Central Virginia Estate Planning Council (CVEPC), and the President of the Charlottesville Area Planned Giving Council (CAPGC). Jason Chestnutt - Associate Director of Gift Planning Jason joined the University of Virginia Office of Gift Planning in June of 2007. Prior to joining the Gift Planning team, Jason spent eight years as a financial advisor at Morgan Stanley and Merrill Lynch both in Atlanta. His experience lies in the area of wealth management with an emphasis on the legal and tax aspects of gift planning. Jason is a native Virginian and a graduate of the University of Virginia (College ’98). He is a member of the Partnership for Philanthropic Planning (PPP) and the Charlottesville Area Planned Giving Council (CAPGC). Doug McCartney - Associate Director of Gift Planning Doug joined the University of Virginia Office of Gift Planning in January of 2007, coming from the U.Va. Health System Development Office. Prior to joining the U.Va. development community, he served as Vice President for Development and Foundation Executive Director at Wayne State College in Nebraska. Doug was a gubernatorial appointee and served as Chief Deputy Director of the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation. He served as Director of Planned Giving and Deputy Executive Director of Major Gifts for a non-profit in Virginia Beach. Before entering the field of planned giving, Doug practiced law for 11 years and is a member of the Virginia State Bar. He is a graduate of the O.W. Coburn School of Law (J.D. ’84) and Oral Roberts University, Business Administration and Management (B.S.’76) and is a member of the PPP and CASE. Ashley Sheets - Associate Director of Gift Planning Ashley joined the University of Virginia Office of Gift Planning in February 2008. Having worked as a fundraiser for the past seven years, she comes to the University of Virginia team from the Office of Estate and Gift Planning at the Arizona State University Foundation in Phoenix. A native Virginian and graduate of the University of Virginia (College ’92), Ashley began her career in banking and financial services. She is a member of the Partnership for Philanthropic Planning (PPP).
